The problem could be your battery has gotten old. When the voltage/current degrade you get some funny problems like the steering wheel telescoping not working correctly or intermittently. Have them test your battery. I have a 2000 xk8 and it had a few funny electrical problems and I asked them to check. BTW electrical engineer.
